The Hours Preceding the MacWorld 2008 Keynote

It’s that time of the year again. A holiday aftershock. Crazed consumers say the man in the black turtleneck visits today. With the MacWorld 2008 keynote only about half an hour away I’m naturally at the computer, eagerly awaiting updates. I must admit that I haven’t been keeping a hawk eye on rumors or leaked information. I suppose that makes the keynote even more intriguing. I’m including a short list below of sites providing live coverage, plus a quick look at a product expected to make its debut.

Live Coverage

As usual, Steve Jobs’ keynote video will pop up online shortly after it’s completed, and naturally that’s a must watch if only to learn a few tricks regarding top-gun presentations. But for us that need our dose of news the second they happen, we can monitor it via live text reports. Several major sites are providing live coverage, some of which are listed below (and a few others over at Mahalo):

MacBook Air?

Although I haven’t been monitoring rumors closely, I came across a story late last night on presumably leaked information about a MacBook Air — a wire-free, ultraportable laptop:

An Apple insider told Wired today that the company’s new ultraportable, expected to be seen in public for the first time tomorrow, has an extremely thin profile and is shaped like a teardrop when closed — thicker at the top behind the screen, tapering at the bottom behind the keyboard. “It’s unbelievably thin,” said the source. The device is made of aluminum and glass, and uses the same design language as recent Apple consumer products: black on silver.

Taking a look at Apple.com today and seeing the slogan “There’s something in the air” lends a bit of credit to that story. You know what’d freak out the world? If they’d somehow managed to make a commercial wireless energy device. Unfortunately that’s practically impossible given the recency of any significant advances in that area. But hey, one can always hope, right?

The real Santas come through wires. They are narrower than chimneys.

  1. I had exactly that same feeling, of Santa coming, or more like our feast of St Nick, which has less to do with Jesus and more with presents.

It was quite the presentation. It killed Twitter. It was amazing. My colleagues thought I’d gone mad.

    ‘t Was a good day.

  2. I was let down by the lack of 3G iPhone mentions. I was hoping 3G plan announcements would indicate the phone being pushed in greater amounts to Europe (it still hasn’t arrived back in Iceland!). But, oh well, good show nonetheless.

  3. No, they predicted the iPhone to arrive end of 07, maybe early 08 here, but I haven’t seen or heard a thing yet either. One rumour did talk of one carrier (Mobistar) getting the contract, but it’s been quiet ever since.

Not that it would matter: way too expensive for me and my boss is cool but not that cool. Hence > :( < me in either case…
