A New Day: Church Free

The Church and State are not seperated in Iceland, and every child born get’s baptized and registered as a Christian unless other is specified. As such, if you don’t unregister from the Church at a later time, it will continue to snatch a piece of your tax here and there (mainly there).

I’ve never got around to unregistering until — you guessed it — today. As of today I am unaffiliated with any religious type of organization. Why not sooner? I honestly didn’t think it was important. Back here in Iceland religion doesn’t wield much power and I considered religion to be diminishing. However, I was becoming obnoxiously aware of certain attempts of religious types to mix science and religion, or taint science with religious rumblings that had nothing to do with science whatsoever.

I wrote an article about it (here), and quickly thereafter attended the International Atheist Conference in Iceland, which had some respected speakers (including Richard Dawkins). This incited me to investigate further and propelled me to take the religion issue more seriously.

In my naivity I assumed rational thought was prevailing, but I realize now that those of us who favor rationalism & science must stand up and be noticed as the voices of reason. The latest trend of religious propaganda is to attack science by pointing to what science hasn’t proven — blatantly ignoring that by doing so they are not making their argument any stronger. There are, however, some people that don’t realize that fact and therfore succumb to these arguments of attack. These individuals are often children, adolescents or people with limited scientific skills.

I think we must seriously consider what needs to be done to prevent the confusion of science and religion, especially with regards to infiltration of religious propaganda in schools.
