Happy Sun Circle Number 4.5 Billion Plus
Happy suncircle everyone (image shows a rough size comparison of the Earth and the Sun, from Wikipedia). Just for the record, a Sun circle is generally referred to as a Tropical Year, or the orbital period of the Earth.
I just Googled the age of the Earth for fun and was apalled to see that the majority of the top results had something to do with religion (Try it). Ugh, where are my antacids…
In sane news, I came across an article on a project of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. They’re using Wikipedia as a database in a common-sense related A.I. project. Quote:
Using Wikipedia, Technion researchers have developed a way to give computers knowledge of the world to help them “think smarter,” making common sense and broad-based connections between topics just as the human mind does. The new method will help computers filter e-mail spam, perform Web searches and even conduct intelligence gathering at more sophisticated levels than current programs.
In my quick search on the issue, I didn’t find much on the technical aspects. But in short it seems they’re using an algorithm to parse the contents of key pages, finding related concepts to draw conclusions about the meaning of sentences.
Check out the related projects such as Cyc or ConceptNet.
