Through The Mechanical Looking Glass

Rozins Robotic Mirror
An exhibit at Bitforms. A series of motorized, multi-colored belts make up a surface. A camera (I presume) detects what’s in front of the surface, and the belts align to produce a similar pattern. All for you, Alice. [Continue reading for video]

The artwork is the creation of Daniel Rozin, an artist from Jerusalem. From the Bitforms exhibition pamphlet:

Displayed at the gallery doorstep, Rozin’s Weave Mirror assembles 768 motorized and laminated C-shaped prints along the surface of a picture plane that texturally mimics a homespun basket. A seemingly organic smoky portrait comes in focus to the sound of clacking steps made by the sculpture’s moving parts. Informed by traditions of both textile design and new media, the Weave Mirror and paints a picture of viewers using a gradual rotation in greyscale value on each C-ring. A playful juxtaposition between the rustic and photographic, this sculpture is suspended from the ceiling. Its functional circuitry and wiring is visible behind the picture plane, exposing its genius craft.

  1. Very cool, I clipped this on clipmarks.com earlier today (my username is constantskeptic on there) great blog, but have you thought about changing your theme to a variable width layout (I have a widescreen monitor and high res, and it seems like your blog is set to too narrow a setting) I recently changed mine to a sleeker variable width design… just a thought.

Thanks for the praise and suggestions. As a matter of fact, I’ve starting considering new theme possibilities but am only at the conception phase. Personally I tend to like fixed width layouts more, but I’m keeping an open mind.
