Mechanized, Transforming Dresses
This video is apparently very popular online right now, I guess because of the appearance of a naked lady and the word “transformer” being combined in it. The video shows the creations of British designer Hussein Chalayan; mechanized dresses that transform by pulling and shifting fabrics via motors (I presume). It looks really great, and yes, I would like clothes that do this. A jacket that pulls up it’s sleeves when its warm outside instantly comes to mind. [Continue reading for the video]
Like I said above, the last dress transforms by pulling its entire fabric up into the hat of the model, revealing her naked body. It looks and feels a bit like an illusion, because the fabric becomes entirely hidden by the hat. Great design work.

That’s pretty neat. Granted, I’m not quite sure if there’s much PRACTICAL use for removing your clothes into your hat, but it’s still a neat display of technology.
I’d like a coat that extends itself based on the temperature. Warm? Waste length. Really cold (and perhaps windy)? Trench coat.

Sigh. Fingers faster than brain.
Obviously, I meant WAIST length, not waste length. That sounds right obscene.

Haha, I got it
Yeah, I’d like a coat like that. The designer mentions being in talks with putting shapeshifting clothing into production. Maybe we’ll get some!
Well, to add to the obscenity, it might work in a bedroom scenario
But really, I think that cloth thing that pulled up doesn’t even qualify as a dress. It could work if it was a scarf! Yeah, that’d come in really handy back here in Iceland at wintertime

I thought of that, but.. well, it took a REALLY long time. Unless it can be sped up, I’m afraid most folks aren’t going to want to wait that long for their dress to disappear into their hat.

I believe I’m going to have to watch this video about 10 more times for “research” purposes.

That is pretty cool.
I could see it being useful in a post-one-night-stand quick-exit situation too.
–”That was nice. Gotta go.”
–”Aren’t you going to get dressed?”
–”I thought ahead–my clothes are on my head. See ya.”
Vulgarity aside though, that could have some fairly practical uses. But it just looks a little creepy. Though I’m sure most of our modern clothing looked a little creepy when whatever slightly-eccentric-it’ll-never-catch-on designer first designed them.
