I think it's an interesting concept to develop both a feminine form and walk for a robot. Appearance-wise, I would bet that people would respond more readily to a female form than a male or basic humanoid design, leading to improved use if they were to be a common item like something in I, Robot. Also, I recall all the boys like me being fairly awkward and clumsy throughout they're growing phases (if not throughout life) and the girls just got more and more graceful movers, or at least less prone to falling down a stair (I'm looking at you ASIMO).

If it can be statistically shown that women are less fall prone, based on their walking patterns (to include activity and footwear), then it would be well worth the investment to research female-like movement in robots.

Human-like robots are a waste of time right now.

Most certainly not. Aside from the fact that humanoid robots are what the public wants — and that humanoid form is practical for a very, very wide variety of tasks — humanoid robot development is dealing with a myriad of technological problems which is speeding up all robot developments.

Only 5 years ago, humanoid robot platforms were so expensive that they were only viable for large corporations and well funded research institutes. Today, anyone can buy one online for $1000 USD. It's quite evident that our research on humanoids is paying off — and that now is the time to for humanoid research.

I agree. Human-like robots are a waste of time right now. We need to focus on the basics.

I often suspect that science teams use these kinds of projects to get funding for their _real_ ( unspectacular ) research.

Frankly, unless it's a Sex-bot I don't think it needs to look feminine.

I also keep wondering why so much time is spent developing the ability to walk. Seems like it would be easier to give robots tracks that can climb stairs and stuff. That already exists today and they could really haul add if they had them.

Seems we spend too much time trying to build humanoid robots and not enough time making robots that I can have in my home NOW which can actually do stuff.
